On Wednesday, the accident at East 14th Street and Thompson Avenue resulted in injuries. Des Moines police and the fire department responded. The Des Moines police reported that there was another collision on Tuesday night at East 14th and Guthrie Avenue that resulted in property damage. Local locals claim that excessive amounts of speeding, dangerous driving, and accidents are keeping people inside.
Geneva Daye, a local for nearly five years, claimed, “I never sit out here.” Daye claims she is worried about the nearby traffic. Daniel Gan, who is remodeling a home close to the corner of East 14th and Guthrie Avenue, is also doing so. “The nexus of stupid driving converges on this intersection right here,” Gan said.
Gan says street racing is not uncommon in the area. “It’s pretty typical that you would see, you know, a couple cars doing, not exactly the fast and the furious, but a couple cars… kind of drag racing each other through here,” Gan said.
The Des Moines city councilor whose ward covers East 14th and Grand streets said the DOT is working on a plan to calm the traffic.
