GoFundMe – The San Antonio adolescent who was shot by a former San Antonio police officer just had a GoFundMe campaign set up by family members. On October 2, Erik Cantu, 17, was shot sitting in his car outside a McDonald’s in the 11700 block of Blanco Road close to West Avenue. On Tuesday, October 11, James Brennand, a former police officer, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault by a peace officer. He surrendered to the police. His $200,000 bail was imposed. He was freed from the Bexar County Adult Detention Facility on Wednesday, October 12, after posting a bond.
According to the GoFundMe created by his uncle Ruben Carranco, Cantu is still on life support after Brennand shot him multiple times. Brennand was trying to interview witnesses after being called for a disturbance at 10:45 p.m. on the night of the shooting when he spotted Cantu’s car. According to police reports, he recognized it as the same car that eluded him the day before when he tried to make a traffic stop. According to SAPD, Cantu stared toward Brennand while holding a hamburger as he approached the automobile on the officer’s body camera video, then backed the car away, striking the officer with the open door. Then, as the door shut and Cantu sped off, Brennand repeatedly fired fire. Later, he was taken to the hospital.
“Erik remains in critical condition, on life support, and the road ahead feels daunting,” his uncle wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Our family is in steadfast prayer for his recovery. We hope you will join us in praying for the stability of his current condition. His injuries are severe, and although he is not yet out of the woods, we remain hopeful he moves in the direction of recovery.”
According to Carranco, the money donated will be applied to Cantu’s medical expenses and to support his parents during this difficult time. He stated: “Erik has brought a lot of happiness and laughter into our lives as a son, brother, nephew, cousin, grandson, and friend. We want God to grant us more chances like this.” As of Wednesday morning, GoFundMe had amassed about $1,800. To make a donation, click here.
