Oct. 11th and 12th….saying goodbye. On the afternoon of Oct.11th, I got a call from Dan’s Dr. I knew. Even though all his numbers had been improving since the night he coded, he had yet to be stable enough to take downstairs for an MRI. When they were finally able to scan him it showed that the had suffered irreparable brain damage. I heard it in his voice the second he called me. I was standing alone in my bedroom and he said the words to me…I am so so sorry….there is nothing more that can be done. I felt shock all over again. I went numb. I got off the phone and called my dad to tell him and to ask him to come pick me up and take me to the hospital. As a radiologist, I wanted my dad to confirm what we already knew to be true. Dan was not going to make it. The whole process, the whole journey from start to finish was surreal. It’s hard to know how your body can handle that kind of information. I think that is why shock is an actual protective measure at times of great distress.
